The first thing I would ever mention to somebody is just this right here [MSCFV], and say there is a resource, there is somebody who can walk you through, you don’t need to need to know what all the steps are. All you need to know is that you just need to take that first one. And when you take that first one in that direction, somebody’s gonna guide you through that, that you’re not gonna be alone...

~MSCFV Client

In an effort to support the victims of domestic violence throughout their journey to self-sufficiency, MSCFV uses a holistic case management program model in which highly trained MSCFV advocates and counselors work with domestic violence victims from their initial contact with the agency (typically at a point of crisis), through their transition to survivor, and ends with self-sufficiency. Programs and supports are offered according to the needs and wants of each specific client.

Crisis

The client is in crisis when they are still with an abusive partner. Primary services include:

  • the 24/7/365 hotline
  • crisis counseling
  • emergency shelter
  • accompaniment to the hospital
  • assistance in meeting basic human needs
  • mental health counseling
  • representation in protective order hearings.
  • pet safety program
  • safety planning

Transition

The client is in transition when they take steps to hold the abuser accountable, including filing criminal charges and obtaining a protective order. In this stage Case Managers focus on helping victims reach self-sufficiency and establish a new life free from violence. Services include:

  • case management
  • assistance with goal setting
  • homelessness prevention
  • housing
  • mental health counseling
  • employment support
  • legal advocacy
  • representation for divorce & custody
  • Economic Empowerment legal services
  • financial literacy trainings and services
  • support groups

Self-sufficiency

Clients reach self-sufficiency when they have established their own permanent housing, have obtained a divorce (if applicable), and have healed emotionally.

Case managers follow up with goal setting quarterly. Clients who have reached self-sufficiency may always contact MSCFV if they have a need. Survivors who have reached self-sufficiency are invited to mentor other survivors.
